COMMITTEE REPORTS:
 
HALL REPORT – Hall Projects (in priority order):
Bathroom exhaust fans - Complete
Insulate crawl space under bathrooms (1/2 done)
Northeast side roof needs additional screws
Kitchen counters need refinished
Kitchen needs exhaust hood and fan – Have 2, now need installed
Repainting or siding replacement needed.  NE and NW sides and under eves of hall
 
Two paid rentals scheduled.  Chaps, Zumba, Sarah Henry (art classes)  and Bridge City Soccer have long term contracts.  Art classes and Soccer sessions suspended for the summer.
 
EDUCATION  -  Oregon public schools have been receiving about 50% of funding from the state (General Fund, Oregon Lottery, and Corporate Activity Tax), 40% from local property taxes, and 10% from federal sources.  Districts statewide are now faceing budget deficits—such as multimillion-dollar gaps in Portland and Salem-Keizer—due to expiring pandemic grants, loss of the federal education department funds, declining enrollment, rising costs (wages and general inflation), and legislative debates over whether the funding model accurately calculates and supports students in poverty.  In several states considerable state funding is also being diverted to private schools.  On the brighter side, on time graduation rates are up and test scores have improved, particularly in states like Mississippi that have high expectations,  concentrate on basics and closely track students for early interventions.
 
LEGISLATIVE –  Laws on serving food are stricter than I realized.  Potlucks open to public are prohibited.  If we do a potluck legally it has to be limited to members of the grange or Chaps or other sponsor.  Intrinsically safe foods have an exception (cookies, chips and etc.).  So advertising come join us for a potluck would be asking for trouble.  Turkey trot will have to get a restaurant license to be legal.
 
AGRICULTURE –  A new (to me) invasive species has shown up in Oregon.  It is an East Asian species of worm called Jumping Worm.  Closely resembles the common earthworm, which is also actually a foreign species except the smooth band around the body is lighter colored and the worms live in organic matter on the soil surface and wriggle so vigorously when picked up that they can jump out of your hand (or a birds beak).  The problem with the new worm is they don’t take organic matter down into the ground, just eat it up on the surface, leaving mostly bare soil.  To make matters worse, their droppings are nutrient poor and water repellant.  Areas in Texas where the worm has been established for some time have become much less productive for shallow rooted crops like vegetables.  No chemical controls currently available.

If anyone has clothing or supplies to donate to the Portland Rescue Mission or Veteran’s Village, we will be going through Portland on May 30th.  You can bring your items to Maplewood and put them in the Museum area.

OREGON STATE GRANGE REPORT – Convention was successful in that much fun and visiting was had and resolutions were debated at length.  Cost was also well below budget largely due to the venue, Baker School District, letting us use the schools for $200/day, a very good deal for us.  On the other hand attendance was down again to around 150. 
Also, your president blew it on the goodie basket which remains at my house.  The $57 will be refunded and the basket used for a PEO fund raiser.

Last Call - Hubbard Hop Festival is July 17-18.  Any interest in a promotional table?  Cost is $25 and would require around 4 volunteers.  Also, there is an opportunity for promotion at the county fair if anyone is interested in spending some time explaining Grange to fair goers in Horner Hall.
