Chaps and Zumba still have long term contracts. EDUCATION - Universities are now being pressured by the federal government to end any “woke” policies such as affirmative action or studies of gender issues. This has disrupted much actual research. Federal civil rights laws have not changed substantially recently, but philosophy of enforcement has. The concept of using affirmative recruiting of particular groups that have been historically discriminated against is now regarded as further (reverse) discrimination rather than necessary restitution. LEGISLATIVE – Resolution time again! Have a pet peeve or special cause? Lets write at least one resolution to guide our lobbyist. Also a list of expiring policy is attached. Love em? Not so much? Let me know. They will be debated at the December Pomona meeting. At the state level, the special legislative session almost passed the Transportation funding bill but is currently stuck due to Republican party opposition and sickness of one Democratic party senator. Republicans oppose any transportation tax increases for any reason noting that several mega projects have soaked up inordinate amounts of the budget and suffered large cost overruns, as well as other complaints. For comparison purposes Oregon’s gas tax in 1960 was 6 cents per gallon with average cost of gasoline in the state around 25 to 30 cents per gallon, a tax of between 25 and 31 percent. Current tax is 40 cents with gasoline costing around $4, a tax of about 11%. Also worth noting that average fuel economy has risen considerably from around 18 mpg to the mid twenties, with newer vehicles capable of over 40 mpg. Real spending on roads is down considerably from the good old days. AGRICULTURE – Deportation of farm laborers has caused major problems in the farm sector. Crops have been lost due to lack of labor and the fear caused by random arrests, indefinite detentions and deportations of those whose only violation of US laws was immigration related. Increased fees for legal temporary workers has also hurt labor availability. Recruiting a skilled foreign worker under the H1B program now costs an additional $100,000 per worker. Ouch.
