July Agenda

7/26/2020

Thought for the month

We must be free not because we claim freedom, but because we practice it. - William Faulkner

Committee Reports:

Hall –  Currently 2 rentals on the books for this fall and one party inquiring about using the kitchen.  No frying but lot of spices.  Exhaust fan would be really good.

Projects in priority order:

Dance hall seating upholstery stained, needs replaced  -  Deferred until Covid resolved.
Foyer tile floor replacement – foyer completed, bathrooms tile sealing in progress, lower stairs completed, upper stairs need trim boards and all stairs need vinyl tread covers installed.
Handicap ramp to basement – Needs paint and trim, stair handrail pending
Sewer line needs replaced - Summer 2020 project plus:
Parking bumpers need anchored - Summer 2020 project
Ped path to front door needs pea gravel - Summer 2020 project
Dance hall floor will need re-oiled for 2020/2021
Roofing screws still pending
Kitchen needs exhaust fan
Need new rugs in front entry (inside and out)
Front doors are coming apart at bottom, need bolted and glued
Kitchen and dining hall floor needs refinished

Agriculture  - Covid virus has disrupted meat exports, particularly to China, after earlier disruption caused by sick workers.  Oregon has now authorized local meat packer inspection to bypass federal delays.

Harvest in full swing, please be patient with equipment operators.  Hours are long and visibility is limited.

Education –  Debate regarding opening schools for onsite instruction has gotten partisan, again, some more.  Europe’s experience has been positive but other places have resulted in multiple infections and some fatalities.  Seems to depend on how serious the combination of schools and communities are about infection control.

Legislative – The redistricting measure is back on at least for a while and is way short of signatures.  Special session of Legislature was relatively productive and despite some complaints of railroading, most measures passed by large margins and complicated policy issues were largely deferred, with the exception of police force regulations.

Pomona Report – Third quarter meeting happened yesterday via Zoom.  Attendance was good, __ resolutions were reviewed..

Community Service - See your red cross chapter.  Anyone who has recovered from the corona virus may be extremely valuable as a donor as preliminary data indicate antibodies in their blood serum are effective against the virus.

Welcoming New Members
When our group takes in a new member, what do you do that celebrates their joining? There are three good reasons to have some ceremony to welcome them into membership.
First, what do you do to make them feel special? What do you do that makes them feel that they are wanted and valued as fellow members? There is real advantages to making new members feel they are special and wanted.
Second, what do you do to make them feel a part of your organization? It is important to share the pride of your group with each new member. Many organizations have formal ceremonies to initiate new members which creates common bonds and experiences between members. Whatever your group does to welcome a new member, it should be more than a receipt for paying dues.
Third, how do you share the written and unwritten rules of your group with each new member? Some form of orientation that explains how your group functions empowers the new member. Do you sit down in a formal manner, or in a relaxed setting to share information? Do you give new members reading material or just let them learn the ropes by the seat of their pants?
How you welcome and treat new members is more important than actually recruiting them into your group. Take the time to understand why and how you welcome new members and then explore how to improve that process. After all, you should want the new member to become a long-time member someday.
