COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Hall Report –

Six party rentals on the books plus Chaps, Zumba, Rental Housing Maintenance, Gamers and Scouts have long term contracts.

Area over sewer pipe has been regraded, next job will be to place a load of gravel there and around back.  Poles to keep traffic off the new grass have been placed but need nailed down.

Hall additions – Cameras and screen are in, lock has been ordered.  Installation when I catch up on orchard work.  Spare pump will be ordered soon.

Hall Projects (in priority order):
Dance hall floor re-oiling
Some grading and additional gravel needed on parking areas.
Front doors are coming apart at bottom, need glued and painted.
Repainting under eves of hall
Northeast side roof needs additional screws
Kitchen needs exhaust hood and fan
Kitchen and dining hall floors need refinished

Agriculture :  Looking more and more likely that there will be food shortages this winter in several areas, overseas as well as some parts of South America.  Prices of staple foods such as grains that poor countries can afford have never been higher.  Unfortunately input prices such as labor, fuel and fertilizer have also soared.  Ag income for this crop year is likely to be higher than last year but not by a lot.  Hazelnuts and other specialty crop prices have not kept up with input prices and margins there are shrinking and may go negative.

Education: Continued turmoil in Newberg’s board meetings seems to be spreading.  I have read about several other districts that have been dealing with turmoil rooted in our current politics.  It has been widely reported that a significant number of teachers are so tired of the conflicts and risks that they will be leaving the profession.

Legislative –  Ranked choice voting is being promoted by Oregon RCV at https://www.oregonrcv.org  A measure is possible at the next election.  Our resolution on that subject was voted down at state convention 35 to 36.

Welcoming New Members
When our group takes in a new member, what do you do that celebrates their joining? There are three good reasons to have some ceremony to welcome them into membership.
First, what do you do to make them feel special? What do you do that makes them feel that they are wanted and valued as fellow members? There is real advantages to making new members feel they are special and wanted.
Second, what do you do to make them feel a part of your organization? It is important to share the pride of your group with each new member. Many organizations have formal ceremonies to initiate new members which creates common bonds and experiences between members. Whatever your group does to welcome a new member, it should be more than a receipt for paying dues.
Third, how do you share the written and unwritten rules of your group with each new member? Some form of orientation that explains how your group functions empowers the new member. Do you sit down in a formal manner, or in a relaxed setting to share information? Do you give new members reading material or just let them learn the ropes by the seat of their pants?
How you welcome and treat new members is more important than actually recruiting them into your group. Take the time to understand why and how you welcome new members and then explore how to improve that process. After all, you should want the new member to become a long-time member someday.
