COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Hall –Still waiting for occupation limit signs.  Will remind Fire Marshall (again) if they don’t arrive in the next week.  Septic evaluation is in County’s very long que and county now says maybe 1st week in September for the site inspection, then I have to apply for the actual construction permit.

Four party rentals on the books and Quilters will be using basement twice a month this fall.  Same fee as square dance lessons.

Home school kids theater group seems to have fallen through.

Reoiling of floor completed.

Hall Projects (in priority order):

Septic tank needs replaced - Summer 2021 project plus: - in progress
Parking bumpers need anchored - Summer 2021 project
Ped path to front door needs pea gravel - Summer 2021 project
Rear yard  - In progress, anyone have mulch?
Front doors are coming apart at bottom, need glued and painted.
Entrance porch needs refinished
Dance hall floor will need re-oiled for 2021 – complete
Northeast side roofing screws
Kitchen needs exhaust hood and fan
Kitchen and dining hall floors need refinished

Agriculture – Harvest still happening, mostly hops in progress now and hazelnuts to go yet.  Caution needed when encountering hop wagons and trucks.  Harvest will be running 24/7 until they get done and drivers often short of sleep.   Ag West CoOp sold most of it’s businesses and is pretty much done.  Appears to be a combination of poor management and the labor shortages, especially of skilled technicians.

Education – “For the 2021-2022 school year, schools must plan to provide full-time, in-person education for all students every school day,” according to Oregon Education Department policy document, Ready Schools, Safe Learners.”  This policy is still in place but what has changed is the governor has re-established a masking mandate for indoor gatherings including school rooms and square dances.  The policy depending on counties to establish their own control measures locally has apparently failed.

Legislative –  Deadlock in DC seems to have partially fractured.  An Infrastructure bill has passed in the senate with significant Republican support and will now be debated in the house.

In Oregon the lobbying organizations are getting geared up for the short session in 2022.  Thousand Friends and Farm Bureau are both planning to lobby for fewer non-farm uses in the EFU zones.  Traffic and other conflicts with farm practices are escalating to the point they are significantly interfering with farm management, especially near major metropolitan areas.

Pomona Report – The log cabin at State Fair is still looking for volunteers.  Shifts are 10:00 – 1:00; 1:00 – 4:00; 4:00 – 7:00. Contact is Susan Noah at master@orgrange.org.

Welcoming New Members
When our group takes in a new member, what do you do that celebrates their joining? There are three good reasons to have some ceremony to welcome them into membership.
First, what do you do to make them feel special? What do you do that makes them feel that they are wanted and valued as fellow members? There is real advantages to making new members feel they are special and wanted.
Second, what do you do to make them feel a part of your organization? It is important to share the pride of your group with each new member. Many organizations have formal ceremonies to initiate new members which creates common bonds and experiences between members. Whatever your group does to welcome a new member, it should be more than a receipt for paying dues.
Third, how do you share the written and unwritten rules of your group with each new member? Some form of orientation that explains how your group functions empowers the new member. Do you sit down in a formal manner, or in a relaxed setting to share information? Do you give new members reading material or just let them learn the ropes by the seat of their pants?
How you welcome and treat new members is more important than actually recruiting them into your group. Take the time to understand why and how you welcome new members and then explore how to improve that process. After all, you should want the new member to become a long-time member someday.
