  2. Custodian:  (No representative assigned)             Betty reported the women’s toilet (nearest the sink) clogged at the Chaps and Petticoats dance on November 6th.   A five-gallon pail of water and a plunger corrected the clog upon the second flushing.   The Custodial decision, for now, was left informal.   Some custodial duties were divided-up (temporarily):
  1.  Vicki feels she can take on some maintenance/fixer issues (like foyer tiles),
  2.  Dan will monitor/maintain the plumbing and paper products,
  3. and Betty volunteer to vacuum the stairwells.
Vicki discussed the possibility of free labor (schools offer student credit for community service).  Possibly Ackerman Academy students (training would be needed on chemical safety and tile versus wood cleaning products).
  1. Education (Dan Keeley):                   Nothing to Report.
  2. Grange Womens Activities (GWA):                 (No representative assigned)
  3. Hall Rental (Dan Keeley):   We have a renter in January at end-of-month.

Communications (Secretary):
From:                                                                    Subject:                  (NONE)

Secretary  (Betty Chipps):

Betty advised the  3rdQ 2015 Report to the Pomona/State Grange was delinquent (due to mother’s auto accident and attention required).

Betty advised there are many materials, awaiting her review, in the Secretary’s file box (inherited).

Treasurer (Kathie Femrite):
Bills:     INFO:  Normal operating expenses paid, without a monthly motion.
Treasurer report on file, (available upon request).

Kathie reported three (3) rents were deposited and two regular operating expenses (PGE and Canby Disposal) were remit in the month.  Additionally a check was issued to the State Grange last month for 3rdQ 2015 Report in the amount of $284.25, leaving an ending balance in the Wells Fargo Checking of $6,049.13.

Reflected on the first month’s Checking statement was a $5 (manual statement) fee – this was to have been reversed by the bank since we did enroll in online banking.  Either our online registration was not timely, or the reversal has yet to catch up with the paperwork...Kathie will monitor.

Deposits received thus far include:  Church $200, and Valley River Dancers $90 (for New Years Eve rental).   Expense reimbursements are needed for replenishing Paper towels and Light Bulbs.  Ken Fessler motion that expenses be paid, Betty seconded, motion carried/approved.

Kathie has not yet gone completely through the Treasurer file paper received from Margaret Timm. Vicki recommended, since the change in Treasurer  (checking account)  and Secretary positions,  a “peer” audit was standard procedure and would preserve reputations of both outgoing and incoming officers.  Vicki volunteered to head up such an audit.  Recommendation was well received.

Discussion regarding the Checking account:  Separate passwords should-have-been provided for Kathie Femrite and Dan Keeley.

Unfinished Business
Potential change in Grange Meeting Date was studied and left the same for now:  Each 4th TUESDAY of Month.
Members should think about a new date and come prepared to discuss at the next meeting.
Projects Dan will tackle in the near future:
  • Fix electrical problem in Grange attic – related to outside light intermittent outages.
  • Outside parking lot needs grated/smoothed out.

Betty will shop around for Dry-Erase board(s) – to aid in jotting down quick projects, or noting supplies needed.
Betty suggests an Inventory List of Supplies be created ... a checklist for items needing replenished.

                                                                        Good of the Order

Finished Business
Committee on Relief -  Dan reported member Sandy Shew is no longer in distress.

As always, Maplewood Grange is looking for community minded folks willing to get involved and leave the world a bit better than they found it.  Open to all since 1867.

From Patrons Chain Newsletter

What? Did I hear that correctly? Did National President Betsy and Membership/Leadership Development Director Amanda both just report at this year's National Grange session that our organization had an increase in fraternal membership?

Well, they did and we did have an increase in fraternal membership of over 700 members. This is the first time in several years (okay… decades!) that we can make that statement. This got me thinking - what is the reason, especially with all we have gone through in the past three years? You could argue that we should have either stayed the same or had a decrease in membership.

I firmly believe that it is in a large part because of what you as Grangers have done in your communities. You exemplified our core values of faith, hope, charity, and fidelity by not giving up and just going through the motions. You did the opposite and did what Grangers do best.

Granges opened their doors when allowed, and welcomed the community in. Granges adapted programming or thought of new programs to help the community get back to some type of “normal.” I cannot begin to count the number of Granges who changed the way they did dinners and went to drive-thru style. Communities responded, and the dinners were mostly selling out because you offered something that they were missing. Granges offered outdoor events of a wide variety which gave people a chance to socialize and be around others. Grangers put together seed and plant swaps because of the renewed interest in growing their own and farm-to-table.

Our hometowns and local areas responded in so many ways to the community service you provided, not only by supporting Granges in your endeavors financially. Instead, people wanted to be part of an organization that gives back and helps in so many ways. I truly believe our increase in fraternal membership is because of everything Granges did no matter how large or even the smallest gesture.

Our Founders would be extremely proud of all the work you have done. Your community service shows why the Grange is still relevant today as it was 150 years ago. Do I think this increase is a “fluke?” No, I do not.

In the words of Cade Howerton, a Junior Granger from North Carolina, “Have a Grange Day”.

Keep up the good Grange work!
