Standing Committees Reports:
  1. Legislative:    Dan Keeley reported the Legislature is in session in Salem.  The minimum wage initiative is going to hurt farmers – fewer hires will likely result.  Current bill is $15/hr. minimum wage, $13.50 in suburbs.
Bill Post wants 50-acres added to urban growth boundary in Josephine County – going to blow up land use system.
  1. Women’s Activities:      (Unassigned)
  2. Youth:  Dan was expecting Kathleen Mason, Aurora Historical Society, would visit this meeting to present a youth cook-off challenge to take place at the Aurora Colony Days on Saturday, August 13, 2016.  Youth would choose a recipe from the Aurora Colony Cookbook and enter cook-off contest.  Aurora is willing to offer Scholarships to youth.
  3. Membership:   Dan reported Laura Ellis, of Mt. Hope Farms, and Grange renter, has expressed interest in becoming a Grange member.

Other Standing Committees:
  1. Agriculture (Ken Fessler):  Dan reported the bargaining price for Hazelnuts has increased, up from $1.10 to $1.50/lb for whole nuts.

  1. Custodian:  (Dan Keeley)
  • Furnace is due for safety check – approximately $100 to inspect.  Sandy Shew recommended Mr. Renhart (sp.) of  S & J, Canby – she strongly suggests we not use Roth’s Heating and Cooling.  Another suggestion was Scott Hess, contractor in Silverton.
  • Refrigerator status:  RH one makes noise, LH one is owned by Scott Tiedtke.  Dan asked shall we get a new refrigerator?   Ken Fessler recommends continue using what we have until Scott removes his.
Don Kingsborough reminded us that Energy Trust of Oregon will pick up old refrigerators and pay approximately $20/refrig.
  • Paint, upstairs, needs a touch-up due to masking tape used on walls (poster tape use is OK).  Dan located the paint and will do the needed patch work on walls.
  • Sandy Shew asks if we need to spruce-up the Grange before the March 6th State Meeting (from 10 AM- 3 PM)?  Don Kingsborough suggests  we stand ready to set-up six different stations – where each District Chair can have a location:  Customer Service, Education, Legislature, Resolution Writing, Veterans, Youth (and Junior).  Dan Kelley advised State is paying ahead for attendees, so Grange food served is the plan.

  1. Education (Dan Keeley):  PERS is being negotiated.  Schools spend approximately 80 of money on personnel; proposing 1/3 of salary for PERS benefit.
  2. Hall Rental (Dan Keeley):   Renters:  1.  Canby Telephone, Tuesday, March 1st afternoon, presenting fiber-optic proposal.  2.  Debbie Headerly (sp.) was in building last week.   3.  Astella Clores will be in building May 7th - $100 check received.  Also Model-T group checking on available spaces for 2-day rentals.

As always, Maplewood Grange is looking for community minded folks willing to get involved and leave the world a bit better than they found it.  Open to all since 1867.

From Patrons Chain Newsletter

What? Did I hear that correctly? Did National President Betsy and Membership/Leadership Development Director Amanda both just report at this year's National Grange session that our organization had an increase in fraternal membership?

Well, they did and we did have an increase in fraternal membership of over 700 members. This is the first time in several years (okay… decades!) that we can make that statement. This got me thinking - what is the reason, especially with all we have gone through in the past three years? You could argue that we should have either stayed the same or had a decrease in membership.

I firmly believe that it is in a large part because of what you as Grangers have done in your communities. You exemplified our core values of faith, hope, charity, and fidelity by not giving up and just going through the motions. You did the opposite and did what Grangers do best.

Granges opened their doors when allowed, and welcomed the community in. Granges adapted programming or thought of new programs to help the community get back to some type of “normal.” I cannot begin to count the number of Granges who changed the way they did dinners and went to drive-thru style. Communities responded, and the dinners were mostly selling out because you offered something that they were missing. Granges offered outdoor events of a wide variety which gave people a chance to socialize and be around others. Grangers put together seed and plant swaps because of the renewed interest in growing their own and farm-to-table.

Our hometowns and local areas responded in so many ways to the community service you provided, not only by supporting Granges in your endeavors financially. Instead, people wanted to be part of an organization that gives back and helps in so many ways. I truly believe our increase in fraternal membership is because of everything Granges did no matter how large or even the smallest gesture.

Our Founders would be extremely proud of all the work you have done. Your community service shows why the Grange is still relevant today as it was 150 years ago. Do I think this increase is a “fluke?” No, I do not.

In the words of Cade Howerton, a Junior Granger from North Carolina, “Have a Grange Day”.

Keep up the good Grange work!
